When the whole thing with the geese happened, it made me think and question myself. Why did these men have to sneak out and kill geese for extra food? Was the chef still not giving them the right amount of food? Or was it that they just wanted something different? Someone like to explain?

When i read this i thought they did this for entertainment. But when Paul caught the goose and cooked it i realized that it was food for them. in the beginning of the book i remember when they were begging the cook if they would have more than they were given but the cook refused. so i would imagine that a soldier living off rations would try to get food whenever possible and i suppose in Paul's case that meant hunting geese.
